🚨 This was the Biggest Upset of the Weekend

Virginia Tech, Penn State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, and other teams opened up the 2022-2023 season. But all the buzz has to go to the upset of the week: Caleb Henson.

  • Story 1: Sammy Sasso Goes Down
  • Story 2: Penn State Opens Season
  • Story 3: Fort Bragg Dual is the Future

Sammy Sasso Gets Upset

Virginia Tech may have lost the dual to Ohio State (18-13), but the Hokies started with a big upset win at 149 lbs. True freshman Caleb Henson took down former NCAA finalist Sammy Sasso in OT (5-3).

Other notable matches

  • 174. Lewis over Smith (3-2)
  • 184. Romero over Bolen (4-2)
  • 133. Latona over Mendez (3-2)

My Take:

149 lbs is insane right now. Gomez lost last week and Sasso lost this week, both to freshmen. Ridge Lovett is also redshirting this year, but Yianni is the guy to beat. He should be cautious because these freshmen are hungry.

Penn State Opens 2022-23 Season

The Nittany Lions opened with a near-shutout (44-3) against Lock Haven. Their lone loss was, unfortunately, at 125 lbs. After Robbie Howard announced he was injured, Gary Steen took the starting spot.

All four NCAA champs earned bonus point wins, and so did Bartlett (141), Van Ness (149), Facundo (165), and Kerkvliet (285).

My Take:

125 continues to be an uphill battle for the Nittany Lions. But when eight of their nine wins are by bonus points, there is no use in getting too upset about the lightweight dilemma.

Battle at Bragg is the Future

To celebrate Veterans Day, the UFC Fight Pass held their first-ever wrestling event at Fort Bragg military base. Here’s what happened:

  • Michigan over Campbell (26-6)
  • North Carolina over Campbell (24-10)

The most eye-opening match of the night was at 285 lbs when Campbell's Taye Ghadiali scored a takedown on Michigan's Mason Parris and held the match to an 8-5 decision in favor of Parris.

My Take:

I attended this event and it was awesome! The military planes & helicopters were a great touch on top of the high-quality production with spotlights, raised-stage mat, and multiple cameras. I hope UFC Fight Pass continues to invest in wrestling.
